We are down to the final leg of the Triple Crown, and it seems we are going to get a super show between Kentucky Derby winner and Preakness runner-up Mind That Bird and Kentucky Oaks and Preakness Stakes winning filly Rachel Alexandra, but the participation of the filly is still a doubt. Hopefully both horses stay healthy and in shape so we can see the rematch at the mile and half race. Read the rest of this entry »

The ozone hole over Antarctica grew to the size of North America in September, the fifth-largest since satellite records began in 1979, the Natiocnal Oceanic and atmospheric Administration said.
The ozone hole is primarily caused by manmade compounds known as chlorofluorocarbons, NOAA said today. Colder-than-average temperatures in the stratosphere may also have allowed a larger ozone hole to develop this year than in 2007, the agency said.
“Weather is the most important factor in the fluctuation of the size of the ozone hole from year-to-year,” said Bryan Johnson, a scientist at NOAA’s Earth System Research Laboratory in Boulder, Colorado. “How cold the stratosphere is and what the winds do determine how powerfully the chemicals can perform their dirty work.”
Record-breaking ozone loss in 2006 occurred as ozone thickness plunged and the hole stretched over 11.4 million square miles at its peak. Last year’s ozone hole was average in size and depth.
The ozone layer acts like a giant umbrella, blocking some of the sun’s ultraviolet rays. NASA satellites measured the maximum area of this year’s ozone hole at 10.5 million square miles and four miles deep on Sept. 12.

Mexico State prosecutor Alberto Bazbaz said 10 suspects believed linked to drug gangs have been arrested in the killings, which mainly occurred on highways and at police checkpoints in the state that loops around Mexico’s capital. Some of the suspects were carrying rifles and grenades at the time of their arrest.
Bazbaz said that many of the suspects were from the neighboring state of Michoacan, a hotbed of drug violence dominated by a drug gang known as “The Family.”
But he said evidence indicates that low-level traffickers and criminals, rather than organized cartel hit squads, were responsible for the attacks.
It was not clear if the killings were part of a coordinated plan.
Mexico State police commander German Garciamoreno said police patrols will be beefed up to confront the violence. The state, like many others across the country, has faced increased drug trafficking and threats against local authorities.
In Tijuana, on the northern border across from San Diego, California, police found two decapitated bodies wrapped in blankets in a vacant lot early Sunday.
The victims’ heads were found nearby in a plastic bag. Cartel hit men in Mexico have increasingly been decapitating their rivals, apparently to spread fear and intimidation.
Meanwhile, federal police reported on Saturday that they arrested the reputed leader of the violent Gulf drug cartel for the border city of Reynosa, across from McAllen, Texas.
Federal police said in a statement that Antonio Galarza was arrested in the northern city of Monterrey on Friday on suspicion of weapons violations and organized crime. He is being held under house arrest while authorities complete their investigation.
Reynosa is a major shipping point for cocaine heading to the U.S. market and is dominated by the violent hit squad known as the Zetas.
Also on Saturday, unidentified persons strung a series of drug cartel messages on banners along roadsides in the Pacific coast resorts of Acapulco and Zihuatanejo. The messages appeared to have been written by the Zetas and accused federal officials of protecting a rival cartel.

Patrick told reporters that the meetings were informative, but that a decision was not imminent. He laughed when asked whether he was closer to a decision after meeting with the two groups of lawmakers.
”I’m glad we didn’t have a fight in there between the pro-gaming and the anti-gaming folks,” he said. ””¦Yes, I’m closer, but am I close? No, I’m not close yet.”
Daniel O’Connell, Patrick’s secretary of Housing and Economic Development, is leading an administration task force that is studying the gaming issue. O’Connell participated in yesterday’s meetings.
As for the moral objections, the state already has legalized gambling in the form of the state Lottery, which provides more than $900 million a year in aid to cities and towns.

(1 votes, average: 5.00 out of 5)Matt Kenseth looks as the favorite guy to win this Sunday’s Banquet 400 at Kansas City Speedway in Kansas City. Kenseth is currently in 3rd place in the overall Nextel Cup standings and seems to have the odds in his favour. It was just last month when Kenseth won back to back races looking for that pole position in the standings. He is still 18 points behind current leader Jeff Burton.
Kenseth had a good performance last week at Nascar’s Racepoints 400, had he not run out of gas on his last lap, in the end he managed a 10th place finish to stay within close range of leader Burton. The second racer in favour of the odds is Jeff Gordon, he also has had great numbers in Kansas since 2001 two victories and a 6th place is his record.
Gordon is a four-time Cup winner and is just six points behind the leader Burton. Also in the race for the checkered flag this Sunday will be Jeff Burton who won last week at Dover, Kevin Harvick will be looking to give the fight for the checkered flag, he won the two previous events and has managed a top 10 result in Kansas back in 2003 when he finished sixth.
