On April 22, 1970, 20 million people across America celebrated the first Earth Day. It was a time when cities were buried under their own smog and polluted rivers caught fire. Now Earth Day is celebrated annually around the globe. Through the combined efforts of the U.S. government, grassroots organizations, and citizens like you, what started as a day of national environmental recognition has evolved into a world-wide campaign to protect our global environment.
Hopefully this tradition stays with us for a very long time days like these, when many different cultures join together as one for on main reason , “ TRY TO PROTECT THE PLACE WE LIVE IN” Too day is not earthday everday as supposed too but probably the blue planet feel good , around the world people plant trees and try to help by , recycling and not contaminating .
This time the host for World Environment Day 2008 will be New Zealand, with the main international celebrations scheduled for Wellington. The slogan for 2008 is “CO2, Kick the Habit! Towards a Low Carbon economy.”
The day’s agenda is to give a human face to environmental issues; empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development; promote an understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues; and advocate partnership, which will ensure all nations and peoples enjoy a safer and more prosperous future. World Environment Day is a people’s event with colourful activities such as street rallies, bicycle parades, green concerts, essays and poster competitions in schools, tree planting, as well as recycling and clean-up campaigns.
I guess that we all have to insted of say happy b-day mother earth should say sorry for what we’ve done to it,but with this celebration millions of trees will be plant around the world to contribute to save The planet.
